Beside Your Heart by Mary Whitney

Pin it to remember it!

Romance novels have never been the type of books I would seek.  Sometimes one would wind up in my “to be read” stack and would wind up in my “not in a million years” stack as soon as I read the synopsis.  Then I saw the introductory story of “Beside Your Heart”.  I’ll admit that I was drawn to the story of a high school boyfriend who stuck in there through the death of his girlfriends sister and the  mental breakdown of her mother.

Nicki often thinks about him and wonders what would have happened with her and Adam if they had taken the next step.

She still cares about Adam and looks him up on the internet when she can.  What she finds is far out of her realm,   Adam is titled and involved with a woman who has a title.  Not only does she have a title, she’s beautiful.  Nicki is immersed in political campaigns and often is dressed in old jean shorts. She sees pictures of Adam and his girlfriend at many society affairs.  They’re dressed beautifully.   She sees the differences in the ways she’s dressed and they’re dressed.  He’s successful and rich, she’s totally involved in politics.

Each of them have people they are seeing, but neither one of them are married.  What does that say about their separate relationships?  Does that leave the door open for something more from someone else?  Maybe each other?

Mary Whitney, the author, worked as an organizer, lobbyist and a non-profit director.  I spent a lot of my working life as an organizer and worked on various pieces of legislation.  I know what kind of information someone who worked on campaigns has.  The fact that Mary Whitney has all that knowledge about politics and has created Nicki as a major player in political campaigns should make this story very palatable.

This is why “Beside Your Heart” has moved back to my “to read” pile.  I’m hooked and you will be too.  You can buy your copy at Amazon.  Find it here –

“Vampiris Sancti: The Immaculate Adventures of One Florian Ribeni” by Katri Cardew

Pin it to remember it!

Source: via Jo on Pinterest

If you have read the first three books in the “Vampiris Sancti” series by Katri Cardew, then you already know what to expect from book four: a complex plot, incredible races and characters, and a fast-paced action that will urge you to read the novel in one sitting. Katri Cardew certainly knows how to build a unique fantasy world in which the readers would willingly lose themselves. If I were to describe this series using only one word, that would be “addictive”.

Florian Ribeni has just become a vampire runner and is training for his new job with Barric, his mentor. They are working together to track down Metis, a rogue vampire who has broken the law and has indulged into human blood. But when Barric is killed, it’s up to Florian to bring Metis down and protect the Veil that keeps mortals from seeing the magical world that is hidden right before their eyes. In his journey, Florian will befriend Beb, a funny Pixie, and have to deal with the infamous Zyre, the mischievous Elf you’ve already met in the first three books.

The author is very talented when it comes to building complex, relatable characters. Before becoming a runner, Florian was a vampire who liked to indulge in all the pleasures his immortal life had to offer him. Gossip, fashion and seduction were his only concerns. Readers will be delighted to see how Florian grew from a shallow, carefree vamp into a responsible protector of his world. He and Beb make a great team, and his encounters with Zyre can be absolutely hilarious. Throw in some more vampires, mages, demons and gargoyles, and what you have is a mind-blowing fantasy novel with an intricate plot that will put your imagination to work and keep you up late to finish the last chapter.

Think the crime and passion of the Godfather meets the romance and innocence of Camelot. A story that could spark a movement, a book that can seed a revolution. A heart thumping climax so shocking you’ll pull the covers and draw the shades! One things for sure, through all the drama and suspense, you’ll be pulling for Jack!

Jack Canon is going to be President of the United States no matter what! This time he s ALL IN. There is a tenderness and kindness in the story, Jack Canon loves his friends.

“Lisa, you have to view yourself from a better perspective; you have a lot of great qualities.”

“That sounds like something my mother would say, Jack.” Tears started streaming down her face. “Jack, believe me, I see what’s happening to me. I’m getting older and haven’t found love, I may never find it. I’ve even considered having a baby in vitro. I’m so worried it may never happen for me.”

Lisa was spilling her guts out. “It’s just I thought she’s your favorite because she’s pretty and I’m not.”
Our waiter was back, ignoring Lisa, wiping her eyes.

He said pouring, “This is a bottle of our best Chianti compliments of the manager.” Jeffrey confided the manager on duty had called the owner of the restaurant and our being there had caused quite a stir back of house .

“Please tell your manager thank you.”

He trotted off beaming. Lisa continued the sad saga, “My dad never told me I was pretty. He used to say it to my younger sister all the time. Until the day he died, he never said I was beautiful. Even at the hospital while he lay dying I waited until he took his last breath to hear him say it, still hoping, but he never did.”

“Lisa, if that’s true it was because you’re so smart, he was focusing on that. I’m sure he thought it. Beauty is all attitude. That’s what I tell Martha and Bethany. You can talk yourself into feeling any way you want.”

“Well, I’m thirty five. I don’t think love’s in the cards for me.”

“Don’t say that. You’re talking yourself out of it. Speaking of love, have you met Bud’s girlfriend yet?”

“No, he’s keeping her all to himself, I guess.”

“Did you hear how they met?”

We were laughing together, Lisa through the tears.

“The whole office heard it, Bud bites and tells.”

“No, Jackie bit him, isn’t it wild?”

“Jackie? He calls her Jacqueline whenever I’m around. If you stop and think, Jack, it s almost Freudian.”

“Oh, you’re funny, keep that to yourself.”

“Sorry, I didn’t say it, Sandy did. Don’t kill the messenger.”

“I knew you d try to cheer me up,” Lisa said, wiping her eyes with her linen napkin.

“I don’t want to see you sad, Honey, that’s all.”

“Jack, I really am thinking of in vitro and I want to have a family even without a husband. Tell me if I’m way out of line but I’ve been fantasizing you would be my donor.”

I almost spit out the wine. Where did that come from? This can t be happening. I could barely believe my ears, didn t Lisa realize I could never father her child and not feel responsible?

“Before you say anything, I promise you no one would ever know. It would be our secret; I would take it to the grave.”

I felt my face may be getting flushed suddenly, the fireplace felt very hot, I was feeling freaked out and had to get her off the subject.

“Lisa, I’ve got a much better idea. I ll help you find someone.”

“How are you going to do what I haven’t been able to do my whole life?”

“I bet you I can do it. Give me a year. If you aren’t in a relationship by then, I’ll consider it.” If not, I could always ask Sandy to be her wingman. She’d get her drunk, dressed and out. No, that would be too easy. If I really care about her and I’m not just kidding myself then I’d want to see her in love and happy.

“Consider being my donor?”

I closed my eyes, shook my head and took a deep breath in and out, “I can’t, Honey but listen, I’m sure if you’ll do what I tell you I can help you find someone.”

“What do you think I am doing wrong?”

I didn’t have the heart to tell her. Where would I begin? First, you look frumpy as hell. Even I know Mousy Brown Bobs weren’t just meant to grow out. You don’t have to be a stylist to know sweaters, pants and flats aren’t very appealing.

Instead, I said, “First of all, you know I love you right? Well, Sweetheart you don’t realize how pretty you are. Because of that, I don’t think you try very hard.”

“Do you really think I’m pretty? I don’t believe you.”

“Lisa, you’re not making any effort. Hey, you know what would really cheer you up? Join me for the concert Saturday. We’ll fly down together and have a great time. Martha’s coming.”

“Really Jack? That would be amazing.”

“First let me treat you to the mall; you can pick out something sexy to wear.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me?”

“If you’re gonna trust me to do this, I’m not gonna pull any punches. Men are visual first, Lisa, and you need to work on that.”

“Jack, I know you’re trying to help, but shouldn’t we just go back after lunch? If we take too long, everyone’s going to blame me. You know Bud will be furious, Sandy will be pissed, and Bill will get in one of his moods. You’ve got so much to do before Saturday.”

“Who cares what the people at the office think, we’re up for this; let’s go pull out all the stops! You’re important to me, Sweetheart.”

“Do you really think it would do any good?”

“By the time I get through with you, you’ll be getting a lot of attention.” Honestly, I didn’t have a clue, but I figured anything off the rack had to be better than what she had on.

“Ya, what is it Honey?”

“I’ve always wanted to tell you you’re beautiful. Don’t take it wrong I mean in a rugged way, but you attract people like a magnet. I’m talking about real people, Jack. You’ve got charisma.”

Lisa was sounding like she had too much wine.

“Lisa, you’re a math wiz, with all the girls out there making bad choices, picking the wrong guy, the odds ought to be in your favor to get one of the good ones that’s left, right?”

“Funny, Jack, but it’s working. You’re making me feel better. I’m almost allowing myself to dream a little. Are you just getting my hopes up?”

“Lisa in a little while, you’ll be beating them off with a stick.”

“Okay, Jack I’ll give it a try. I’ll do whatever you say, I’m all in.”

What drives him?

Early in his life he witnessed unbelievable inhumanity. At the tender age of ten he vowed to someday change this cruel and unjust world.

I ll never forget the look on my dad’s face. We were stopped at a checkpoint by dangerous looking men in military uniforms. Soldiers hollering back and forth waiving weapons, searching through our things, taking anything they wanted. One guerilla was approached by an emaciated little boy with skin so thin it strained to cover his veins. Crying out, eyes bulging from hollow sockets, the child’s spindly arms grasped for the soldier’s leg. The helpless act was answered with the butt end of a rifle, sending the child violently to the ground. Semi convulsing, blood gushing from his head, the boy curled up in a tiny brown ball and went to sleep. At least that’s what my mom told me. That scene played over and over in my head growing up. It made me sad, but mostly furious, that life could be so unfair. Our family missionary trip to Africa meant to teach us love, compassion, and understanding had burned a fire in my belly so intense it stayed with me throughout my life.

That was forty years ago Today, back to back recessions have left ordinary people hurting.

One in six Americans are food challenged.

Nearly one million in the U.S. are homeless, 13% of those are employed full time.

Worldwide, two billion people, live on less than two dollars a day.

Fact: 1% of the World Population controls 50% of Global resources the rest are forced to live on what remains.

Jack’s focus on redistribution of wealth and energy has made him powerful enemies. Once his friends, Rogue Billionaires, Oil Sheiks, the Mob, all want him gone. The current President wants him alive–thinking he can win against an unabridged liberal. A Universal Raw Nerve of wealth vs. poverty is exposed becoming a thrill ride as deep machinations of espionage, geo-politics and deception, even murder play out.

Would you Risk the Crime of the Century to Set Things Right?!

I think those excerpts and the idea that there is so much tenderness between Jack and his female friends. Plus,
What does it really take to become President of the United States? Would you risk the Crime of the Century to help those less fortunate?

What is one of the main points of this book? It’s sexy! For example:

Like earlier, when Lisa and I walked into the salon the young women who walked over to greet us made quite an impression. Her movements caught my eye as we entered and I secretly hoped she’d be interacting with us. Walking like it was an art form, she slinked her way toward the front reception area and strangely unlike most people the closer she got the better she looked. An all black mini dress barely covered her. From a high collar, it scooped ultra low backless loosely draping her bottom revealing some of her sides and lowest back.
I could make out a couple tattoos without trying to hard. They were both in handwritten script; one across the exposed part of her foot read butterflies. The writing flowed beautifully at the angle of her heels. The other four lines of a story centered across her ribs. Normally I don t even like tattoos, now I’m fantasizing about tracing the letters with my tongue and tasting her skin. Once upon a time, a girl got her heart broken

Her hair was gorgeous. She wore it mid back length, stick straight, with bangs just touching the top of her softly brushed brows. Crazy, I’ve never liked black hair before, but I was fascinated by the shine.
Close up her face looked smooth as silk, like it was in soft focus. Her delicate features reminded me of a new fawn with giant eyes and a turned up nose. I thought, the lighting must be magnificent in here, so I looked over at Lisa to test the theory.

Lisa shot me a look like don’t you dare compare me to her. It wasn’t the lighting.

Face to face, I focused on her steely blue eyes under large lids covered in smoky dark charcoal. Her body language was saying no, quickly twitching her head. She looked Lisa up and down as if she was nothing, and then briefly turned a dismissive glance towards me.

Through high gloss lips that were a perfect match for a hot pink scarf she wore, she asked, “What can we do for you today?”

“The Bad Parent” by Dominique Wilkins

Pin it to remember it!

Source: via Jo on Pinterest

It does not come as a surprise anymore that people are judged based on appearances or on rumors which oftentimes prove to be completely false. What some of us fail to realize is that appearances can be deceiving, and that judging someone based on them could potentially harm the respective person. Things may get complicated and truly uncomfortable: what if you were a single mother, trying your best to take good care of your child, facing all sorts of difficulties, and yet people would judge you wrongly, considering you a bad parent?

Dominique Wilkins wrote several books that are part of the Contemporary Christian and Inspirational fiction genre, short stories depicting real life situations which, despite the fact that they include brief sex scenes, violence, or strong language, are written with taste. D. Wilkins’s stories are relatable, the reader being able to draw useful life-lessons from them.

In the short story “The Bad Parent” we read about the struggles of Gina, a single parent whose only support is her mother. After a brief romance with ‘Big’ Dave, Gina finds herself alone with a child to raise. Apart from the usual hardships which single parents are faced with, Gina’s situation takes a turn for the worst when Lil Dave, her son, enters school. Soon after, he is labeled, isolated, and left without help by those who would have the authority to do something for him.

“The Bad Parent” is a heart-touching story which will move its readers on a deeper level, giving them a whole new perspective on life, on the effects of judging others, and on the difficulties of raising a child without one of his parents. This short story has an unexpected ending that is bound to leave a strong impression on the reader.

Regardless of the reason which stands behind your choice to read Dominique Wilkins’s book – be it because you are a Christian or simply because you enjoy reading something decent, based on real-life circumstances –, “The Bad Parent” is an eye-opening, motivational story.

The Holy Ghost Writer and Robert Galbraith: Two pen names with lots of similarities.

Pin them to remember them!

A Ha!  Expressed in a fashion similar to the contraction – Gotcha!   I’m sure you’re able to relate to that feeling, that brief spot of light, it’s not just deja vu it’s more like “Hello old friend”.

Previously, I noted that The Holy Ghost Writer seemed to be a literary time traveler because he was so similar to Dumas in his way of describing and flushing out characters.  The plotting and laser sharp insight into his characterizations echo the style of Dumas in such a seamless manner that you don’t realize you are reading a different author until you are pulled away from the book “The Sultan of Monte Christo” and realize that your brain accepted The Holy Ghost Writer as actually being Dumas.

While perusing “The Cuckoos Calling” by Robert Gallbraith I found myself surrounded by a familiar written landscape.  Watching characters that are being fully developed as they were brought into the story line with Striker being the pivotal character as a private detective, hired to find out if  movie star Lula Landry really killed herself or if someone push her off the roof.

Lula had been adopted when she was 4 years old.  She had a rough time as a teenager, using drugs and charged with truancy she was headed for big consequences.  The culmination of the rebellion was when she ran away to London and her parents found her in a drug den with a bunch of junkies.  After being in and out of rehab, they finally figured out she was bi-polar and straightened out her meds. You couldn’t tell she was bi-polar as long as she stayed on her meds.  Lula remade herself from a punk druggie into an international film star.

In The Holy Ghosts Writer’s book “That Girl Who Started Her Own Country” Zaydee, wasn’t an orphan but she was deprived of parents because she was abused at home.  She finally took off and wound up involved in drugs, was made a ward of the court because of being bi-polar and was abused within that system.  Her moral salvation came when  she met a man that showed her that being on the side of right was not only a good thing to do, it was much more exciting to bring down the bad guys.  Of course there was opportunity knocking for Zaydee, not legal like Lula’s was, but both women were able to become wealthy and revered through their disparate talents.

Possibly both of the authors really are seasoned professionals.  Probably they are one in the same, one author writing with the name of the Holy Ghost Writer, the other  using the name of Robert Galbraith.  J. K. Rowling has admitted that she wrote “The Cuckoo is Calling”.  She has not said one word about “That Girl That Started Her Own Country”.

The Holy Ghost is presently offering $1,000.00 to anyone who guesses who the author really is.  There is a picture of a disguised Holy Ghost Writer on the cover of one of the books.  The Holy Ghost is just too skilled to be making such a masterful plot presentation and the level of writing of a pro.

Want to take a better look at The Holy Ghost’s Writing and an image that may or may not be J. K. Rowling?  See what you think, enter the contest and win $1,000.00/  Find the collection of the books by Holy Ghost Writer at Barnes and Noble –

“Strategic Thinking – Game Over” by Steyn Heckroodt

Source: via Jo on Pinterest

Starting a business isn’t difficult compared to the real challenge of keeping it running and – most importantly – making it thrive. This is particularly true nowadays, when a person who would like to create a prosperous business of their own has to deal with both the fierce competition and the unfavorable economy. Steyn Heckroodt’s book, “Strategic Thinking – Game Over”, opens a whole new dimension regarding business strategies.

Specialist in the areas of Systems Thinking and Strategy, Steyn Heckroodt stated in his book that, when it comes to business and the strategies implemented in this field, being successful isn’t a matter of whether you are right or wrong, or about knowing or not knowing a certain thing. According to him, the most important factor determining your success is how you think. As Heckroodt puts it, “We need to understand strategy, not just know what it is and how to compile it.”

Regarding traditional analysis methodologies – such as PEST (Political, Economic, Social and Technological) and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) –, the author points out their shortcomings and recommends that people shift their strategic thinking practices in order to efficiently deal with today’s business challenges. Given the development brought by the twenty-first century in various areas – from Physics to medicine, from business to technology , and so on –, more innovative strategies are in order.

This is exactly what “Strategic Thinking – Game Over” has to offer to its readers. In easy-to-understand language, Heckroodt explains how the manner in which you think about something leads to a certain level of understanding. Furthermore, higher levels of understanding of a business and the environment in which it operates lead to better management and, thereby, to better results. In order to theorize and exemplify this idea, the author uses a mental hierarchy based on that of Russell L. Ackoff, which comprises five categories: data, information, knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. At the end of each chapter, you will find a “Points to remember”-section that acts like a summary of the respective part of the book.

If you want to revolutionize your business strategies and how you think about them, then start reading Steyn Heckroodt’s guide – you will be glad you grabbed a copy.

Vampires of Rome by Peter Joseph Swanson

Pin it to remember it!

Cover for 'Vampires of Rome'

May I introduce you to the wonderful mind of Peter Joseph Swanson.  Peter’s writing is anything but repetitive or derivative.  You won’t find his plots in every other book of vampire lore.  He has a unique vision and a way of expressing his ideas that is ultimately readable and entertaining.

It’s 16th century Rome. Imagine putting yourself in the barefeet (I’d say shoes but he doesn’t have any) of  Giotto of Abruzzo.  Poor little country bumpkin, he had been essentially hobbled by his Uncle who kept him to do most of the work on his farm.  Giotto had no shoes, no money and no knowledge of the world outside his Uncles’ farm.  His friend Calvi, who worked the farm with him was convinced that witchcraft could get them shoes and a way out.   All the while, Giotto  begged him to stop because witchcraft was wrong. .  When the Uncle catches Calvi doing witchcraft he kills Calvi, accuses Giotto of doing witchcraft too so Giotto started running.  When he ran away he had no idea where to go or what to do.

Along the way he met up with Sumer who made him a vampire. After waking, naked in the town square, abandoned by his maker Sumer and not knowing how to cope with the world, he turned himself in as a witch and was waiting for death.  Rescued from his prison cell and death by King Akkad, he is naked and scared.  Akkad has an agenda made even more in-depth after drinking some of Giotto’s blood.  He hounds Giotto for reasons why King Sumer made him a vampire as Giotto claims.

Slowly Giotto starts remembering how he became a vampire.  He is able to remember more and more as he tells what he remembers of his story and how his fate became a part of history.

While drinking free blood at an underground tavern he befriends the barmaid and together they  discover the blood’s true wicked purpose and source.

Peter Joseph Swanson has created an original plot for a great page turner of a novel.  Want to see for yourself what the mind of Peter Joseph Swanson can create?  Check him out on his website –

“Vampire Elite” by Irina Argo Is Free on Amazon on 7/19-7/21

Every time I say the vampire books published in the past few years cannot bring anything new to the genre, I find a book that proves me wrong. This is exactly what happened with “Vampire Elite”, the first volume in the “Vampire Elite” series by Irina Argo. Based on an ancient Egyptian legend, this paranormal novel is like a breath of fresh air thanks to its innovative take on the vampire myths. If you are tired to read about a vampire who falls in love with a young, innocent human girl, then it’s time you tried something new: in “Vampire Elite” we have two immortal races that are equally powerful.

The background story is, no doubt, one of the strongest points of this novel. The vampires were born from the blood of a vengeful Egyptian goddess, while the Amiti were created by Hathor, the goddess of love and beauty. Even though they are both immortal and they are meant to live in peace, these races are very different and this causes a great war between them. The vampires have hidden their love in the darkest corner of their soul, and when they realize that the Amiti can gain control over them and bring their love back to light, they decide to enslave them and use them for their special blood. Will the Amiti rise again and defeat the proud and powerful vampires? Or will the vampires crush the Amiti and condemn themselves to eternal darkness?

Irina Argo has managed to create some very complex and unique characters that readers will relate to immediately. Arianna, the Queen of the Amiti, is a young woman who doesn’t fully understand her powers, but is determined to win the war against the vampires and save the enslaved Amiti. On the other hand, Tor, the King of the vampires, is a powerful man who wants to control Arianna, but ends up falling in love with her. The unexpected love between Arianna and Tor will put the two races in great danger and will force the leaders to make some hard choices. The readers will root for the two characters and find themselves turning the pages as fast as possible, curious to find out what happens next.

“Vampire Elite” is not your average vampire book. The originality of the plot and the brilliant writing style will take you by surprise and make you read the novel in one sitting. Let’s hope that the second book in the series will be released soon enough, because such incredible fantasy novels tend to become addictive.

Make sure you download “Vampire Elite” while it is free on Amazon, from July 19 to July 21.
