“Memoirs of the Damned” by Yasir Hayat

Pin it to remember it!

Do you miss the classic gothic tales where vampires were not the nice and romantic beings they are today in most fantasy novels? Then “Memoirs of the Damned” is the right book for you. It is the story of a lost soul, of a man whose whole life was a tragedy, and who chose a different kind of death when given the opportunity. Why do I say a different kind of death? Because Yasir Hayat’s vampires have all the features of the classic beasts: they are hideous, they can’t see their own reflection in the mirror, their heart doesn’t beat, and they are strong, but dead inside. As you read the novel, you’ll start wondering if a normal death wouldn’t have been a better option for the main character, than an eternal life as a monster.

Andross Ameliyo seems to have been cursed since his birth. After both his parents die, he is sent to a children’s workplace, where he is beaten and insulted until he can’t take it anymore and runs away. A wealthy gentleman finds him and takes him under his care, acting just like a father. Things seem to get better for Andross, and his protector even marries him off to his lovely daughter, Alisha. But when the man dies of a heart attack and Alisha falls victim to the plague, Andross finds himself alone in the world again. This time it’s even harder for him to rebuild his life, because he has known love and happiness. However, he is given a second chance when he meets a stranger who is like no man he has ever seen. He is a vampire, and he asks Andross to make a choice: become immortal and drink human blood, or continue his painful, pathetic existence.

What would you choose if you were in Andross’ place? That’s right… immortality. Maybe out of curiosity, or in hope that your life would change. But Andross chooses it because he believes that nothing can be worse than his current state. He goes through a complete transformation and becomes Crimson, the demonic assassin of redemption, as his master names him. He becomes a ruthless beast who can kill anyone his master asks him to kill without feeling remorse, but a beast who can still have feelings for a beautiful woman.

“Memoirs of the Damned” is a fascinating novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is the perfect choice for all fans of the gothic and horror genres, focusing on themes like revenge, sorrow, rage and redemption. It is impossible not to feel sorry for Andross, who has suffered so much during his mortal life, and wish to see him find the peace he deserves.

Vampiris Sancti: The Elf by Katri Cardew

Pin it to remember it!

Before we begin, there are some things you need to know about  Zyre, she is an Elf .   The Elves have mastered four elements that ensure their survival in the harshest of environments; they lie exceptionally well, their preference for the unexpected is constant, they can often hide in plain sight and if worse comes to worst,   they can seduce their way into safety.   Such spoiled brats they are!

Tread carefully when you go to  Zyre’s world.  Chances are she won’t be there though.   No way was she going to submit to the marriage arranged to  Vryn Dhaigre,  a Matryc demon prince.   With the arranged marriage in the works, she goes running to the Reveal. There she can  enter the humans world and raise a little havoc  to amuse herself while she’s trying to lay low.   Such a bad move, you see Elves enjoy messing with humans, it’s fun, it’s easy but it gives off a type of signal that allows the Elders to find you and track you back to your current location.  Kind of a paranormal karma.  That’s how they found her so, to dupe them, she moved in with the Vampires.

Be patient and take your time as you enter this world.  As with any place it is a complicated and constantly changing place.  There’s a Pixie who gives Zyre the lowdown, but only when he’s drunk and then it’s in poetry, there’s a newly turned  Vampire who doesn’t know what she is or where to go so everyone seems to be following her,   so does Zyre.  Her demon prince Vryn Dhaigre, oversees the Vampires financial affairs.  As you wander through, it all starts to make sense and you’re now in the front seat of a roller coaster breaking the speed of light.

Katri Cardew manages to piece this quilt of beings into cohesive groups of culture and counter culture.  She moves at least one player from each field into the place where only enemies were thought to dwell. Katri Cardew manages to create a multi-layered fantasy thriller.

You’re not going to be able to stop yourself from diving back in any time you put this book down for a while.  You’re going to be amazed that Zyre, in an angry fit, goes to confront Vryn Dhairgre with her demands.  He had forgotten that she may have her own.  Everyone of them has their own agenda, some will win, some will lose and Zyre may stop running.

Do Not Go To Work, Dad written by Candi Perez, illustrated by Clara Spinassi

I doubt if there is a kid anywhere who doesn’t hate when their parent/parents leave them to go somewhere else. What child can think of anything better than spending a day together?  What parent would much rather do that?

Pin it to remember it!

Do Not Go To Work Dad

This book is a lovely rendering of what a dad and his child would do on that magical day;  wake up, eat a yummy mountain of  pancakes, make sure that the syrup is dripping over the side.   We see  a picture of daddy and daughter dancing to loud music and playing with dolls.   Also they’re shown having fun catching butterflies and chasing ducks at the same time.  I’m tired just typing it, but the kid is fine!

Dad and daughter are  drawn in a very simplistic relateable fashion.  The illustration was drawn with a heavier black border in the same manner that children draw.  This makes it much easier for the child’s eye to grasp.  The colors are muted so that the story can be viewed on it’s own.

This is a great kid and parent read and it’s also a good book for the child to go through alone.  Because of the literal illustrations the child will be able to retell the story while going through the book alone.  This book is a great addition to the books available to the child.   Want to get a copy for story time?  You can get it on Amazon.   Find it here -

“The Light” by Robert Hammond

Pin it to remember it!

Source: via Jo on Pinterest

“The Light” is the powerful, inspirational and heart-wrenching story of a boy who grew up wanting to be someone else, who lost his way, succumbed to temptations and drugs, and eventually found the power to rise back up and turn to spirituality. Abel Adams is one of those characters who fascinate you, make you root for them, be sad when they are sad, and wish they would find redemption in the end. He might remind you of someone you know, or he might even remind you of yourself going through a difficult time. The author himself says about Abel: “Abel Adams is essentially an allegorical composite of all of us who have gone astray at some point in our lives.”

The novel starts with the very beginning: Abel’s birth. We watch him growing up, going to school, making friends and enemies, and then being ignored by his parents when his younger brother is born. Actually, Abel’s childhood was far from being an ideal one. Living in a neighborhood of white people and going to school with white children can never be easy for a black child. He is constantly reminded that black is a horrible color and that he will never fit in. It’s no wonder Abel falls to the temptation of drugs when he grows older, and ends up in prison many times. Will he ever find his way back to light? At this point the readers will be glued to the pages, wishing for Abel to be given a second chance. They are sure he would take advantage of it, because it doesn’t matter how low one falls; there is always hope for recovery.

While in prison, Abel goes through a miraculous transformation and his life changes completely. “The Light” is the story of his spiritual journey, of his revival and discovery of love, freedom and spiritual enlightenment. But the path is not an easy one, especially after falling so far into the darkness. Abel’s struggles will break your heart, but even then you’re sure he will find his way towards light because he is so much more than society made him be.

Robert Hammond is a truly talented writer. His characters are believable and relatable. It’s impossible not to find yourself in at least one of them. The book’s message is beautiful and powerful, and it will stay with you long after you finish the book. You might want to recommend “The Light” to your friends, because it’s a novel anyone would want to have on their shelf.

“Dinosaur Books for Kids: The Peaceful Plant-Eaters” by The Dino Detective

Pin it to remember it!

Source: via Jo on Pinterest

This book is very different from any children’s book about dinosaurs you’ve ever come across. You’re probably wondering why. Well, because it combines interesting facts about dinosaurs with beautiful pictures and very fun and challenging quizzes. Children will be absolutely delighted at the idea of checking what they already know about dinosaurs and learning new things at the same time.

“The Peaceful Plant-Eaters” is a cleverly organized book the young dino detectives will love because they can easily turn it into a game they can play with their brothers or sisters. They will get to know a couple of things about each of the largest dinosaurs that ever walked the earth, and learn how to pronounce their names correctly. For every dinosaur there is a question with three possible answers. If the children give the right answer, then they are taken to the dinosaur’s picture and most important facts. These facts include: the name of the dinosaur with the correct pronunciation, the nickname, where it lived, its length, height and weight, as well as the food it ate. But if the children don’t answer correctly the first time, they are given another chance and a hint. This game is so entertaining, that the young readers might be fascinated by the book for hours.

Unlike other books about dinosaurs, which provide either too many pictures with no explanations, or long texts children can barely understand, “The Peaceful Plant-Eaters” is very well structured and well balanced. After your children learn about the plant-eaters, don’t forget to get them the first book in the series – “The Menacing Meat-Eaters”.

Jack Canon’s American Destiny by Greg Sandora

Pin it to remember it!

Jack Canon is an idealist.  He’s on the road to fight the good fight and the only road that will allow him to do that is the one leading to the White House.  Great plan, but plans don’t always end up going the way we want.  This Senior Democratic Senator from Kentucky is a  kind, smart, charismatic family man.   He is a man of superior intelligence who isn’t afraid to admit to a mistake.  He has always been faithful,  but he has a very intimate, hands off relationship with Sandy his assistant.  Hopefully this won’t derail his campaign.

None of the bad guys want him in office and they knew he had plans to change America and make us an even greater country.  The bad guys want to maintain the status quo so there were numerous attempts on Jack’s life trying to ensure that he would never be president.  The  first murderous attack backfired, but then others joined the fray.  The three forces of evil and chaos are -  The Mob, Rogue Billionaires and Oil Sheiks.

Through all of this, the President wants to run against Jack. Jack has plans to change our country for the better and has the intelligence to traverse the murky waters of political infighting.

“Jack Canon’s American Destiny” is a sly ride on a slippery slope.  This fast paced thriller is packed with political issues that mirror what we have going on today.  If you notice, the villains are a conglomerate of who we have deadly problems with right now, so it echoes what we deal with on the global level at this time.

The author, Greg Sandora, manages to introduce all this well written madness in a way that will keep you glued to this book.  Sandora has used well flushed out characters, timely villains, an image of our present president therefore the actions are very relatable to the reader.

Leaving Salt Lake City by Matthew Timion

Pin it to remember it!

Matthew Timion found the woman of his dreams.  Dreams are not always pleasant, some are nightmares, he should have been more cautious.  Leaving the Mormon Church is frightening for anyone and Matthew was having a hard time dealing with the issues it brought up.

Matthew,  as with the ex-Mormons I know,   had to get support because  the larger culture in the US  left him feeling lost and alone.  Many would argue that LDS was a cult because of  the practices and theology taught by the church.  It is experienced as a cult because  the Mormons tend to create their own separate culture so when you leave you are truly disconnected from any of your previous friends and  your relationship with your higher power.

In “Leaving Salt Lake City”  Matt is a very needy man.  When he joined an ex-Mormon online group,  he immediately made a connection with a woman who seemed to be on the same playing field  he was.  It was validated by the immediate sexual magnetism they felt when they finally met at the airport.

He didn’t make any mistakes that the rest of us haven’t made, but it seems as you’ll see in “Leaving Salt Lake City”, the floor fell out for him in a grand play of madness and emotional blackmail.

You can’t read this book without feeling terribly sad for everything that hits him.  There are so many things that readers will relate to, told in an amazingly readable manner.  This book is a great view into the life of an ex-mormon  and will let you see how the religion manages to permeate every facet of a followers life.

I’m cheering Matthew Timion, cheering for him to have a great life that he creates on his own not through dictates of others.  I wish him well and you will too when you read this important book.  You can buy it on Amazon.  Find it here –

“Moving In: A Tale of an Unlicensed Marriage” by Bruce Littlefield

Pin it to remember it!

Source: via Jo on Pinterest

“Moving In: A Tale of an Unlicensed Marriage” has to be the funniest book I’ve come across in a long while. It’s the heartwarming story of two city boys who are madly in love with each other and decide to leave the busy and stressful city life to move to the country. If you’ve ever been in a relationship, then you’ll recognize all the hilarious situations these two find themselves into, and you’ll remember just how much the little things matter.

Bruce Littlefield is a NY Times best-selling author and a lifestyle expert. This is his most personal book, in which we get to meet him and his partner, Scott Stewart, one of Manhattan’s top real estate brokers, going through the little ups and downs that make a relationship so much stronger and special. If you’ve read his other books, then you know to expect an engaging writing style and a story you can learn a lot from. It’s the adventure of Bruce and Scott’s first year of living in the country and fixing up a historic old house that posed more challenges than they had expected. The author will take you on a wild ride meant to brighten your mood, make you feel better about your relationship, and remind you just how funny some meaningless arguments can seem after some time. This book will help you relax and take everything more light-heartedly.

Before grabbing “Moving In: A Tale of an Unlicensed Marriage” make sure you’ve done all the cooking and cleaning, and that there will be no distractions, because it will be impossible to put it down once you start reading it. Also, prepare to laugh out loud on every single page, because Bruce has a unique way of describing everything so vividly that it will be easy for you to imagine just how they learned to operate a lawnmower, or almost strangled each other with Christmas lights. After reading this book, you might see your own relationship in a whole different light and remember just how grateful you should be for all the silly situations you and your partner get into.

This is a story about love, commitment and true happiness that you’ll want to recommend to all your friends. But don’t give them your copy; make them buy theirs, because you’ll want to read this book over and over whenever you feel down or in need of a good laugh.
